Cylindrical Sack Gabions, also known as Sack Gabions or Cylindrical Gabions, are flexible, cylindrical structures made from double-twisted hexagonal wire mesh. They are designed for fast deployment in projects involving river training, flood control, underwater scour protection, and emergency breach sealing.Their flexible design allows for quick on-site filling and installation, making them ideal for both permanent and emergency projects. With durable wire coatings and on-site filling capability, they provide a practical, fast, and adaptable solution for a wide range of hydraulic and environmental engineering applications.
Sack Gabion Structural Variations
- Cylindrical Sack Gabions: Standard shape; rolled mesh tubes filled with stone and sealed.
- Rectangular/Square Gabions: Folded into flat or square boxes; used at embankment bases and behind retaining walls.
- Trapezoidal Gabions: Tapered for slope stability; stackable for stepped protection.
- Triangular Gabions: Fit into irregular spaces between piers or erosion pits.
- Conical/Bullet-Shaped Gabions: Self-standing or embedded into riverbeds for emergency sealing or fast current zones.
- Flat Mattress Sacks: 0.15–0.30 m thick, used for underwater erosion control with a wide surface area.
Main Structure of Cylindrical Sack Gabions
- Options: Hot-dip galvanized steel, Galfan (zinc-10% aluminum alloy), or PVC/PE-coated steel wire.
- Compliance: Meets ASTM A975-97 standards.
- Tensile strength: ≥515 MPa.
- Mesh sizes: Common options are 80 × 100 mm and 60 × 80 mm.
- Twist requirement: Each twist ≥50 mm to ensure coating protection.
- The entire gabion is formed from a single sheet, rolled into a seamless cylinder.
- Open cuffs are left at both ends to assist with sealing after stone filling.
- Reinforcement: 2–3 internal longitudinal edge wires (diameter 3.4–4.0 mm) are sewn into the mesh wall to prevent tearing during lifting or impact.
- Ends are sealed with binding wire or steel rings of the same material.
- Optional geotextile lining can be added to prevent stone loss and improve filtration.
- Use hard pebbles or boulders, size 100–250 mm.
- Filling rate should reach ≥90%.
- Stones should interlock to resist shear force and improve overall stability.
Specifications(Classification/Dimensions (φ × L))
Sack gabion sizes are expressed as diameter × length, and custom sizing is possible:
- Standard Sizes: φ0.65 m × 1.5 m, φ0.95 m × 2.0 m, φ1.0 m × 2.5 m
- Large Size: φ1.2 m × 3.0 m
- Emergency Sack: φ0.45 m × 1.0 m
- Height tolerance: ±5%
- Wire diameters: Typically 2.2 mm, 2.7 mm, or 3.0 mm
- After coating: Outer diameter increases by ~0.5 mm with plastic coating
- Linking System: Adjacent sacks are connected with binding wire or steel rings, forming a continuous erosion-resistant chain structure.
Application
- Pier scour prevention
- Riverbed or slope erosion control
- Emergency breach plugging
- Temporary cofferdams
