PVC Coated Gabion Specifications

• Core Wire Diameter: The steel core wire before PVC coating usually ranges from 2.0 mm to 4.0 mm. Common sizes are 2.7 mm or 3.0 mm. Thicker wires provide more strength but reduce flexibility.
• PVC Coating Thickness: PVC coating is usually 0.4 mm to 0.6 mm thick, with 0.5 mm as standard. It protects the wire from corrosion and environmental damage.
• Overall Wire Diameter (Mesh Wire): The total mesh wire diameter, including PVC, is 3.0 mm to 5.0 mm. A 2.7 mm core with 0.5 mm coating gives about 3.7 mm overall.
• Selvedge Wire Diameter: Selvedge wire is thicker, 3.0 mm to 4.5 mm (core). It's usually 0.5 mm to 1.0 mm thicker than mesh wire. Coated size reaches 3.9 mm to 5.5 mm.
• Lacing and Bracing Wire Diameter: Lacing/bracing wire diameter is 2.0 mm to 2.4 mm (core), commonly 2.2 mm. With coating, it reaches around 3.2 mm overall.
• Mesh Type: PVC gabions are available in hexagonal woven mesh and welded mesh. Woven mesh is flexible; welded mesh is rigid and more structured.
• Mesh Opening Size (Hexagonal): Hexagonal mesh openings include 60×80 mm, 80×100 mm, and 100×120 mm. The 80×100 mm (8x10) type is most commonly used.
• Mesh Opening Size (Welded): Welded mesh sizes include 50×50 mm, 75×75 mm, and 100×100 mm. Rectangular types like 50×100 mm are also used.
• Tensile Strength of Wire: Wire tensile strength ranges from 350 N/mm² to 550 N/mm². Stronger wires offer more strength but less flexibility.
• PVC Coating Adhesion: The PVC coating must not crack, peel, or detach during use. Standards like ASTM A975 check the coating's bond to the wire.
• PVC Coating Hardness: PVC hardness is measured by Shore scale. Values range from Shore A 50–65 or Shore D 20–30, good for abrasion resistance.
• Corrosion Resistance: High-quality PVC gabions resist corrosion for 2000–3000 hours in ASTM B117 salt spray tests with no major coating failure.
• UV Resistance: UV inhibitors are added to PVC to prevent damage from sunlight. Design life may reach 50–100 years depending on exposure.
• Gabion Box/Basket Length: Gabion box lengths range from 1.0 m to 4.0 m. Common sizes are 1.0 m, 1.5 m, 2.0 m, 3.0 m, and 4.0 m.
• Gabion Box/Basket Width: Most gabions are 1.0 m wide. Other widths include 0.5 m, 1.5 m, and 2.0 m depending on the project requirements.
• Gabion Box/Basket Height: Standard heights are 0.3 m, 0.5 m, and 1.0 m. Boxes can be stacked to reach greater wall or structure heights.
• Gabion Mattress Dimensions: Mattress height: 0.17–0.5 m. Length: 2.0–6.0 m. Width: 1.0 or 2.0 m. Used mainly for erosion and channel lining.
• Internal Diaphragms: Boxes over 1.5 m long have internal diaphragms every 1.0 m. These divide the box for stability and shape retention.
