Galvanized Gabions Applications: Retaining Walls, Slope Stabilization, Erosion Control, and Protection Works

Jiangyin Rock Gabion Co., Ltd. offers galvanized gabions. Galvanized gabions are rectangular wire mesh containers made from galvanized steel wire and filled with stones to form retaining structures for erosion control, river channel lining, slope stabilization, and landscape walls. They are available in welded and hexagonal woven mesh types, with wire diameters commonly ranging from 2.0?mm to 4.0?mm. The wire surface is coated with zinc to enhance corrosion resistance and extend service life in harsh environments. Materials include low-carbon steel with hot-dip galvanized, zinc-aluminum alloy coated, or PVC-coated options. Features include flexibility, permeability, ease of installation, and long-term structural integrity. We provide product customization and welcome inquiries and negotiations.

Galvanized Gabion Specifications

  • Material Composition: Gabion wire is made from mild steel (low carbon steel), chosen for strength and flexibility. It meets standards like BS 1052 or ASTM A641/A641M for tensile strength, allowing it to form durable woven mesh structures.
  • Mesh Wire Diameter: Main mesh wire ranges from 2.0 mm to 4.0 mm (0.079–0.157 inches), with 2.2 mm, 2.4 mm, 2.7 mm, 3.0 mm, and 3.4 mm commonly used. Thicker wires are selected for higher strength needs.
  • Selvedge Wire Diameter: Selvedge (edge) wire is stronger, typically 2.4 mm to 4.4 mm (0.094–0.173 inches), often 0.5–1.0 mm thicker than the mesh wire. A 2.7 mm mesh wire usually pairs with 3.4 mm selvedge wire.
  • Lacing Wire or Binding Wire Diameter: Lacing wire joins gabion panels and units. It is thinner, usually 2.0 mm to 2.4 mm (0.079–0.094 inches), with 2.2 mm being standard for ease of tying and assembly.
  • Tensile Strength of Wire: Wire tensile strength ranges from 350 to 550 N/mm². Some applications use 380–500 N/mm² or up to 750 N/mm² for extra reinforcement depending on environmental conditions.
  • Galvanization Type: Hot-dip galvanizing is standard for corrosion protection. Galfan coating (Zn-5% or Zn-10% Al alloy) is also used for better resistance, especially in harsh or long-term applications.
  • Hot-Dip Galvanization Coating Weight: Zinc coating weight is 215–300 g/m², per ASTM A641/A641M or EN 10244-2. A 2.7 mm wire may have 245 g/m², while a 3.0 mm wire can have 255 g/m² for long-term protection.
  • Galfan Coating Weight: Galfan-coated wire offers 2–3 times better corrosion resistance than zinc. Coating weights are 200–300 g/m², giving the same thickness but longer life under similar exposure.
  • PVC Coating (Optional Additional Protection): PVC coating adds 0.4–0.6 mm, commonly 0.5 mm, to the wire for extra corrosion protection. For example, a 2.7 mm wire becomes 3.7 mm with the PVC layer.
  • Mesh Type: Gabions use double-twisted hexagonal woven mesh with three half-turns. This twist helps prevent unraveling and gives flexibility to fit ground surfaces securely.
  • Mesh Size (Opening D x H): Common mesh sizes: 60x80 mm (Type 6x8), 80x100 mm (Type 8x10), and 100x120 mm (Type 10x12). Sizes are selected based on stone size and application needs.
  • Gabion Box/Basket Length: Standard lengths are 1.0 m, 1.5 m, 2.0 m, 3.0 m, and 4.0 m (3.3–13.1 ft). Custom lengths can be made to fit specific project dimensions and layouts.
  • Gabion Box/Basket Width: Most gabion baskets are 1.0 m wide (3.3 ft), while 0.5 m widths are used in special cases, such as Reno mattresses or narrow wall sections.
  • Gabion Box/Basket Height: Typical heights include 0.17 m, 0.23 m, 0.3 m (for Reno mattresses), 0.5 m, and 1.0 m (0.56–3.3 ft), depending on wall height or slope need.
  • Diaphragms: Gabions longer than 1.5 m include mesh diaphragms every 1.0 m to prevent bulging. These internal dividers improve structure and keep stone evenly distributed.
  • Tolerances: Tolerances include wire diameter ±2.5–3.0%, mesh size D ±10%, and box dimensions ±3% (length/width) and ±5% (height), ensuring accurate production.
  • Standards and Certifications: Relevant standards: ASTM A975/A975M, EN 10223-3, BS 1052. ISO 9001 ensures quality management across gabion production and factory operations.
  • Corrosion Resistance and Lifespan: Hot-dip galvanized gabions last 20–50+ years in dry conditions, less in marine zones. Galfan coating extends lifespan 2–3 times under similar conditions.
