Reno Mattress, also known as Gabion Mattress or Scour Control Mattress, is a flat and wide flexible wire mesh structure made from double-twisted hexagonal metal mesh and filled with natural stones. This modular system forms a continuous mat used for erosion control, river channel protection, slope stabilization, and ecological restoration. Reno Mattresses are designed for rapid installation, enhanced flexibility, and effective energy dissipation. Standardized mesh sizes, fast construction, and integrated vegetation support make them ideal for both engineering and landscaping applications.
Structural Components
Mesh Material and Weaving
- Materials: Galvanized steel wire, Galfan-coated wire (5% Zn-Al), or PVC/PE-coated steel wire.
- Mesh Type: Double-twisted hexagonal mesh; common sizes: 6 × 8 cm and 8 × 10 cm.
- Tensile Strength: 350–550 MPa; Elongation: ≥10%.
- Wire Diameter: 2.0–3.0 mm (mesh), 2.7–3.9 mm (edge and partition wire).
Panel Construction
- Panels: Bottom plate, side plates, end plates, partitions, and cover plate.
- Partitions: Installed every 1 meter to form individual compartments.
- Structure: Double diaphragm with single-piece mesh folding improves integrity.
Stone Filler
- Material: Hard rocks or pebbles sized 7–25 cm.
- Size: ~1.5 times mesh opening; void ratio 20–30% for permeability and root growth.
Standard Sizes
- Common Lengths: 3 m, 4 m, 5 m, 6 m
- Width: Standard 2 m
- Heights: 0.15 m, 0.17 m, 0.23 m, 0.30 m
- Custom Sizes: 1 m × 1 m, 2 m × 1 m, and other dimensions available
- Height Range: Typically between 0.15 m and 0.30 m (lower than standard gabion boxes)
Functional Features
- Flexible Structure: Thin and wide design adapts to slope contours and uneven foundations.
- Permeability: Interconnected voids allow water drainage, reducing hydrostatic pressure.
- Energy Dissipation: Filler and mesh reduce flow velocity and protect the subsoil.
- Vegetation Integration: Supports soil coverage and plant growth for ecological restoration.
- Corrosion Resistance: Coatings provide durability up to 30–120 years, resistant to expansion/contraction.
Construction Details
- Edge Reinforcement: Thickened edge wires twisted and folded back to resist tearing.
- Filter Layer: Use geotextile or 10–15 cm of crushed stone under the mattress to stop fine particle migration.
- Binding Method: Use binding wire or steel rings spaced 200–300 mm to connect all panels and compartments.
- Stone Selection: Graded boulders with a minimum dimension exceeding the mesh diagonal; ≥90% fill rate.
- Greening Technique: Add 5–10 cm of topsoil and seed moisture-tolerant herbs or shrubs.
Installation Process
- Site Preparation: Level the ground and lay the filter layer.
- Unfolding and Assembly: Open folded units, install side and end panels, secure partitions.
- Layered Filling: Fill compartments with stone from bottom to top and center to edges; compact as needed.
- Sealing: Tie cover and side panels securely to prevent stone escape.
- Connection: Link adjacent mattresses using wire or rings to form a unified slope protection system.
